Summers are one of the roughest seasons for your hair. Just like the sun’s rays can be harmful to your skin, they are also harmful to your hair. Other factors like chlorine, salt water and other free radicals can also do some serious damage. Just a couple weeks into Summer and all the hard work you’ve done the rest of the year can be erased. Here are some tips for keeping your hair and scalp happy and healthy during the warm summer months.

Fight the Frizz Factor

Dry hair soaks up the extra humidity in the air. This causes the hair shafts to swell and cause breaks in the cuticle. It’s important to keep your body and your hair hydrated during the summer months. Drink plenty of water, keep hydrating foods in your diet, and make sure your haircare is packed with hydrating and moisturizing ingredients; like our Replenishing Moroccan Hair Care Collection

Get A Trim

It’s always good to get a trim when the season starts to make sure your hair is primed for success. It’s a great way to eliminate any split ends so that your strands will stay stronger.

Pre-moisten Before Swimming

The high salt content in salt water and the chlorine in pools will suck the moisture out of your hair and damage your strands. So, before you go for a swim, dip your hair in clean water first. That way your hair will already be soaked with clean water and absorb less of the saltwater or pool chemicals.

Shield Your Strands

When you’re going to be spending more time in the summer sun you definitely want to look for products that include UV protection. Not only can they damage your lovely locks, but they can also dry out your scalp. You may also want to consider wearing a wide-brimmed hat when spending time outside.

Use the Sun to Your Advantage

The summertime is a great time of the year to use the sun to your advantage and let your hair dry naturally instead of using heated tools and let the sun do the work instead of hair dye. The sun’s rays are great way to naturally lighten your hair. Try keeping it down while you’re laying poolside. This will add some nice subtle highlights to your hair.

Avoid Tight Hairstyles

Loose hairstyles are perfect for summertime. You want to avoid styles that are tight and pull at your hair. They can be damaging under normal circumstances, but especially so during the summer months when your hair may be dried out from the heat.

Wash Less Often

Washing to frequently can strip your hair of its natural oils, which will stimulate more oil production, making you feel like you need to wash it more often. Try substituting a dry shampoo in place of washing on some days. It will help absorb excess oil.
